PHP-FIG代表了社区的一个横截面，随着时间的推移，这个横截面已经增加到包括更多的人员和项目.
该小组是由许多框架开发人员在php|tek上于2009年自己发起的。自那时以来，许多其他成员提出申请并被投票通过，将小组的规模从最初的5人增加到20人以上.
最初，项目是完全的框架，但很快就发现CMS、应用程序、软件包开发人员等也加入了进来。这样做的目的是获得生态系统的横截面，而不仅仅是一组特定的开发人员。让实现者与创建软件包的人员以及使用框架开发系统的人员一起工作都是同样重要的.
